NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE BLASTS TRUMP MOVE ON COLLEGE DIVERSITY
NEW YORK (July 3, 2018) – National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial today sharply rebuked the Trump administration’s decision to rescind federal guidance on promoting racial diversity at elementary and secondary schools, colleges and universities.
“Time and again, this administration’s actions demonstrate not just indifference, but outright hostility to the ideals of diversity and inclusion,” Morial said. “Our nation’s colleges and universities do not yet reflect the racial makeup of our college-age population, and we should be working to improve representation. Instead, the administration turns its back on hard-working students of color.”
Morial noted that a New York Times analysis last year found that Black students were drastically underrepresented at elite schools. Black students are just 6 percent of freshmen but 15 percent of college-age Americans.
“We won’t stand by and allow the hard-fought achievements of the last 50 years to be dismantled,” Morial vowed. “This move sends a dangerous message that diversity is not welcomed or wanted. That’s inconsistent with decades of legal precedent, and it’s inconsistent with our national conscience.
