Urban League's Morial: Bannon's Voter Suppression Effort "Morally Reprehensible"

NEW YORK (May 17) -- National Urban League President Marc H. Morial today condemned the reported effort by Donald Trump’s then-campaign chief Steve Bannon to suppress African-American votes in the 2016 election.

“Any effort to steer eligible citizens from exercising their sacred right to vote is un-American,” Morial said. “Specifically to target voters of color, who have fought and bled and died in defense of that right, is morally reprehensible.”

A whistleblower who worked for Cambridge Analytica, a political consulting firm that supported Trump’s campaign, testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee that he did not know the specifics of the suppression campaign. But, Morial said, it’s clear that social media was flooded with negative messages and misinformation aimed at African-Americans.

“Both the House and Senate must investigate this effort thoroughly and comprehensively,” Morial said. “It’s important that these nefarious tactics and the amoral operatives who use them must be fully exposed and the public educated so voters can beware of the lies and mudslinging directed their way.”
