NEW YORK (March 2, 2018) -- A federal court has ordered an organization in Dallas, improperly operating under the Urban League name, to stop using the Urban League’s registered trademarks.
“The Urban League of Greater Dallas was disaffiliated in 2015,” National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial said. “We have no affiliate in Dallas at this time. The group operating under the Urban League name is doing so deceitfully and illegally, and the federal court has just confirmed that.”
The court had issued a temporary injunction in December 2015 against the use of the Urban League name and logo in response to a lawsuit National Urban League filed a month earlier. This week’s ruling makes that injunction permanent.
The National Urban League disaffiliated the Dallas group in response to serious concerns about the fiscal management and organizational governance of the Dallas organization. Prior to the disaffiliation, the National Urban League worked for months with Dallas leaders to bring the organization into compliance with the Terms of Affiliation, the contract which governs the relationship between the National Urban League and its affiliates. The affiliate failed to comply with the corrective action plan, Morial said.
