National Urban League Statement on Trump Administration Rescinding DACA
WASHINGTON, DC (September 5, 2017) - National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial issued the statement below following U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and President Trump’s decision today to end DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program:
“The Justice Department and White House’s decision to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program without any recent movement on immigration reform by Congress is the latest onslaught on underrepresented and poor communities by this Administration. To revoke the legal status of up to 800,000 ‘Dreamers,’ who are contributing members of our society, and leave them vulnerable to deportation is not only merciless, but it is also short-sighted in the wide-spread effect it will have on our nation’s economy.
“President Trump is cunningly passing the buck to Congress with full knowledge that the Republican-led House and Senate are unlikely to move immigration reform legislation-- thus setting the stage for massive deportation of children and young people from the only country they have ever known.
“The National Urban League urges congressional leaders to defy our expectations of continued gridlock and, instead, work together to immediately pass comprehensive immigration reform legislation that will provide paths to citizenship for Dreamers and others. We must preserve America’s ideals of being inclusive in this very divisive period.”
