1. NUL Youth Leadership Summit Town Hall
Students gathered in the New Orleans Theater to discuss the issues affecting youth and solutions to those issues. Many students were excited to see and hear from celebrities like House of Payne’s Demitria McKinney and Meet the Browns’ Lamaan Rucker. Trayvon Martin Family Attorney Benjamin Crump also spoke and initiated the “I am Trayvon” Battle Cry.
2. Recovering from the National Urban League’s “White Linen Night”
As many made their way to the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, people were still raving about the previous night’s conference. Biz Markie proved that nobody can beat him, Doug E. Fresh taught us how to do the Dougie in three different scenarios , and Chaka Khan inspired us with her effortless singing and personal tales of getting healthy and sober.
3. Troy Simon
East New Orleans native Troy Simon inspired the hundreds of guests in attendance at the Youth Leadership Summit. He shared his compelling personal journey of being 14 years old and illiterate and attending the Urban League’s College Track program, which helped him get on the right track to earning a full ride to Bard College at age 19.
