The National Urban League expresses our deepest sympathy regarding the passing of civil rights activist Evelyn Lowery. Mrs. Lowery, the wife of Rev. Joseph Lowery - a founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) - was a champion for women's empowerment, as well as children's and family issues. A respected and revered on-the-ground soldier for social justice, Mrs. Lowery participated in the 1965 Selma-to-Montgomery march in Alabama and later founded the SCLC's sister organization, SCLC/Women's Organizational Movement for Equality Now Inc., among other programs. Her life was an exemplary representation of service and commitment to equality. We are ever-indebted to her for the tremendous impact that she made on civil rights in America and to creating opportunities and a better life for millions of Americans.
