National Urban League's Statement on President Trump’s Discriminatory Ban On Travel

NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE: WE ARE “DIMINISHED” BY DECISION TO UPHOLD DISCRIMINATORY TRAVEL BAN

NEW YORK (June 26, 2018) -- National Urban League President Marc H. Morial today issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to uphold President Trump’s discriminatory ban on travel from mostly-Muslim nations:

“Today’s Supreme Court decision has dealt a crushing blow to America’s long-standing status as a refuge from religious persecution. We are diminished, as a nation by this indulgence in cultural fear-mongering rooted in political cynicism.

“In an amicus brief filed by the National Urban League and other civil rights groups, we argued the nation's history of stereotyping on the basis of religion has created a violent and discriminatory climate that harms the nation as a whole. Today’s decision compounds that harm.

“The United States has not been made safer by President Trump’s discriminatory travel ban; in fact, the escalating climate of fear and bigotry assuredly has made it less safe. We in the Urban League Movement continue to stand against religious-based discrimination and stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the Muslim community.
