National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial called for Minneapolis police to exercise restraint in response to protests over Jamar Clark’s fatal shooting, and encouraged a prompt and open investigation of the case.
“The discrepancies between witness and police accounts are disturbing,” Morial said. “The community’s concern is valid and the rights of the protesters need to be respected.”
The National Urban League has called for widespread use of body cameras, a measure that would have gone a long way in clarifying the circumstances surrounding Clark’s death.
“If trust is to be restored between the police and the community, every aspect of the investigation needs to be transparent,” Morial said.
Morial commended the Minneapolis Urban League for its successful effort urging police to release the shooters names.
“President and CEO Steven Belton has demonstrated exemplary leadership in demanding accountability from the police and responsible advocacy from the community,” he said.
