National Urban League: Leaders Must Denounce & Combat White Supremacy

NEW YORK (August 10, 2018) -- National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial today issued the following statement on the anniversary of the white supremacist violence in Charlottesville, Va., and the planned commemorative rally planned in Washington, D.C., this weekend:

“As white supremacists again prepare to march on an American city, a year after the deadly Charlottesville rally, the National Urban League urges all Americans to demand action from our elected leaders.

“They can begin by clearly and unambiguously denouncing this demonstration and all displays of bigotry. President Trump’s shocking reluctance last year to condemn the neo-Nazis energized the dangerous and repugnant white nationalist movement and diminished our moral standing as a nation.

“We join other civil rights organizations in calling for oversight hearings regarding prosecution of hate crimes and domestic terrorism, the enforcement of civil rights laws and restoration of the Voting Rights Act.

“Last year’s horrifying display, which left three tragic deaths in its wake, was a low point in our recent history, and one from which we have not recovered. Our determination to resist, however, has only grown stronger. The National Urban League and the Urban League Movement works to combat discriminatory policies and to protect the economic and social progress that we and previous generations worked tirelessly to achieve.”
