National Urban League Dedicates New Headquarters: Current and Former Presidents Gather to Celebrate

NEW YORK (May 16, 2018) – The National Urban League celebrated its century-plus history today with the dedication of its new headquarters in Lower Manhattan, led by several past Presidents and the family of the organization’s second leader.

“While our tactics and tools have dramatically evolved over the course of our history, our essential mission of economic empowerment and social justice is unwavering,” said Marc H. Morial, who has served as President and CEO since 2003. “Today we had the opportunity to reflect on our journey and the incredible men and women who have led us along the way.”

Conference rooms at the new headquarters have been named for each of the organization’s seven past President – Morial is the eighth - and the founder of the Urban League Guild, Mollie Moon. Each room includes an exhibit about its namesake.

“It’s both humbling and energizing to celebrate the achievements of those who’ve gone before us,” Morial said. “Every day our staff has the opportunity to learn about our history and take inspiration from these great leaders.”

Present at the dedication were:

  • Hugh B. Price, who served as President from 1994 to 2003
  • John E. Jacob, who served as President from 1982 to 1994
  • Vernon E. Jordan, Jr., who served as President from 1971 to 1981.

Also participating were family members of Eugene Kinkle Jones, who served from 1917 to 1941 as the League’s second Executive Director.

The new headquarters at 80 Pine Street include a state-of-the-art conference center named for the League’s founders, George Edmund Haynes and Ruth Standish Baldwin. Photos from the event can be viewed HERE.
