National Urban League Calls Final Passage of Majority Tax Bill A Broken Promise
WASHINGTON, DC (December 20, 2017) – National Urban League President and CEO, Marc H. Morial, issued the following statement on the final passage of the House and Senate tax bill in both chambers today:
“The Congressional majority has once again blatantly ignored the needs of hardworking middle and low income Americans by passing a tax bill that will ultimately undermine and in many cases cripple their financial security.
“Congressional leaders promised meaningful remedies to a broken tax code that would aid small businesses, put more money in the pockets of main street Americans, and expand access to the American dream for all. Instead, this Congress and Administration made their priorities clear by passing a severely lopsided bill that benefits a chosen few at the expense of those who need tax reform the most. People deserve more than broken promises and empty rhetoric.
“Although some Americans may see a slight bump in their paychecks as a result of the new tax code, the reality is that it will come at the cost of cuts to key programs and services that millions of Americans rely on to make ends meet. Rather than providing an economic boost that could move people out of poverty and into the middle class, this bill will sadly result in more out-of-pocket expenses and a reduction in critical services for already vulnerable communities.
“The National Urban League will do all it can to support the communities we serve in urban and rural America in the difficult time ahead, as we have since our founding in 1910. However, we will not forget the harm caused by this bill and will continue to mobilize our communities to demand more from our nation’s highest governing bodies.”
