Historic Confirmation of A.G. Lynch Coincides with Need to Address Civil Rights Concerns
NEW YORK (April 23, 2015) -- Calling Loretta Lynch “the most qualified person ever to hold the post,” the President and CEO of the National Urban League said he is confident the U.S. Attorney General can lead the Justice Department during a troubling era of civil rights unrest.
“The nation is in desperate need of AG Lynch’s expert leadership now that the Justice Department is engaged in investigations of voter suppression and police violence against men of color,” Marc H. Morial said. “Her exemplary record and sterling character are unquestioned, and her confirmation has been long past due.”
While Morial hailed the Senate’s confirmation of Lynch at long last as a historic step forward, he noted that the damage caused by the inexcusable delay will take time and effort to heal.
“We’ve waited longer for AG Lynch’s confirmation than we had to wait for the last seven Attorney General nominees combined,” Morial said. “The Senate leadership will have to work hard to overcome this breach of trust.”
