IN CALL WITH NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE LEADER, A.G. VOWS COOPERATION
NEW YORK (February 9, 2017) – National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial today said he spoke to newly-confirmed U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions by phone, and that Sessions had affirmed a commitment to core civil rights and voting rights principles.
“I stressed how important the Department of Justice is to the civil rights community and the National Urban League, and that we are interested in maintaining continuity of the progress made over the last eight years,” Morial said.
Sessions had faced opposition from civil rights groups, including the National Urban League.
“I recommended that it was imperative to build a working relationship with the leaders of historic civil rights organizations, despite our differences and notwithstanding the fact that many of us opposed his appointment,” Morial said. “The importance of the Justice Department to the progress of civil rights cannot be overstated.”
