This is a sad moment for our nation.  The not guilty verdict in the trial of George Zimmerman has extended the tragedy of Trayvon Martin’s death to a travesty and miscarriage of justice.  While we must accept the jury’s decision under the due process of the legal system, we want to make it clear that this is far from over.  We are focusing on two important aspects of federal law which may have been violated by George Zimmerman and which should be investigated, with the potential to lead to an additional indictment and another trial.

The National Urban League mourns the passing and celebrates the life of leader, statesman and champion for social justice - Representative Bill Gray.
    
A man of principle, moral courage and abiding faith, Rep. Gray led a life of service and leaves a legacy of good works. He will be remembered as a tireless fighter for the citizens of Philadelphia and as a political pioneer who broke ground as a leader in the House of Representatives -- the first African-American to serve as Majority Whip, Democratic caucus leader and Chair of the Budget Committee.

“He brings a solid record of innovative and results-driven leadership that will be serve the country well in building a world-class transportation system for the 21st century.

As we near the 50 year celebration of the height of the Civil Rights Movement, the Supreme Court ruled on two significant civil rights cases this week - today on Shelby County v. Holder re: the Voting Rights Act and yesterday on Fisher v. University of Texas re: affirmative action.
