The National Urban League expresses our deepest sympathy regarding the passing of civil rights activist Evelyn Lowery. Mrs. Lowery, the wife of Rev. Joseph Lowery - a founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) - was a champion for women's empowerment, as well as children's and family issues. A respected and revered on-the-ground soldier for social justice, Mrs. Lowery participated in the 1965 Selma-to-Montgomery march in Alabama and later founded the SCLC's sister organization, SCLC/Women's Organizational Movement for Equality Now Inc., among other programs.

National Urban League President & CEO Marc H. Morial today issued the following statement in response to the FCC order on Interstate Inmate Calling Service Rates.
 
“Chairwoman Mignon Clyburn and the FCC are to be commended for voting today to bring balance to the needs of inmate families—especially the 2.7 million children in the U.S. with an incarcerated parent—with service providers by setting reasonable telephone rates that will remove the financial burden from families trying to support their incarcerated loved ones.
