The ability of the energy industry to provide employment opportunities was discussed at the National Urban League Conference panel, “The 411 on Energy and Employment: Why Urban Communities Need to Be a Part of the Conversation.”
While the industry is a top producer of jobs, the need to attract more African Americans to those jobs and make them more aware of what opportunities the energy industry has to offer was a central issue discussed.
Attending the panel on behalf of the CASEnergy Coalition, which according to informational material, “supports the increased use of nuclear energy to ensure an affordable, environmentally clean, reliable and safe supply of electricity,” Georgia Representative Calvin Smyre said that energy, along with broadband technology, was a “major economic driver in our economy.”
